I spent another relaxed day with Gitte on November 9. After the emotional ups and downs of the previous weeks, these slower days with an old friend were exactly what I needed. We didn’t have any big plans — just time together, talking and enjoying each other’s company.

At one point we went out to the North Sea, where I watched Steve, Gitte’s roommate, fish along the shore. It was a quiet, overcast day, and standing there watching the waves and the fishing line felt strangely peaceful. Moments like that were becoming more meaningful to me as the trip went on — simple, ordinary scenes that somehow felt important.

Even though I was still traveling, these days were starting to feel like a gentle wind-down. I was still excited about what was ahead, but I was also beginning to look forward to going home.

My Photographs from Today

We spent a relaxed afternoon by the water while Steve fished along the shore. The last photo in this set was actually taken by Steve — right before I slipped on the wet rocks!

DAY 64 / 11-09-94Århus, Denmark

Today was another simple & relaxing day, good for thinking and a nice time-out before my mad dash of traveling that I’ll face in the next four weeks / six countries.

I slept till 1:00, then spent the whole afternoon with Steve – Gitte’s roommate – fishing. Actually he fished and I took pictures.

The afternoon was marred though when I slipped on some rocks and banged up my shin and soaked my foot in the icy water of the North Sea. By the time I got home my foot was like a block of ice, and it took a very hot shower and an hour or two before it returned to normal.

I’ve been by myself all night, Gitte is at work, and I felt a BAD case of homesickness coming on. Luckily I avoided the brunt of it by forcing myself to plan several alternative routes for my traveling & by reading & adding to my list of accomplishments.

I’ll have to remember this day the next time I say “I hate Kearney” because right now I really wish I was there.

These are my travel notes. I was trying to figure out my route for the following day.
